Chicco offices in the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Russia, the United States and Argentina decided to support, since 2013, the "Mission Bambini" Foundation in programs focussing on the treatment of childhood heart disorders. In fact, for many children in the world, the right to life is unfortunately challenged by congenital malformations. Each year in fact about 1 million children are born suffering from congenital heart diseases. Paediatric cardiac surgery involves the correction of heart disorders in children who would otherwise not survive the first year of life and intervening straight after birth. In the West it is a widely practised skill and allows young patients to be operated on and, in most cases, resulting in an almost normal life. A problem of vital importance that can be solved thanks to the solidarity and altruism of those that are more fortunate, whose gesture can enable a child in difficulty to be happy.
“As volunteer doctors we go directly to the countries that are most in need, to look after children being treated for heart disease and teach local doctors about this wonderful field of work. The expression in the eyes of the children we meet is a combination of tenderness and pride. These children are different to ours, who are perhaps a bit too spoilt by daily well-being. They suffer in silence without drawing attention to themselves and are capable of showing profound gratitude”.
“Once an eight-year-old boy asked us to make him better so that he could play football with his buddies. After his operation he paid us a visit and gave the surgeon a football as a sign of gratitude. For doctors it takes courage to stop being a volunteer, not to start”.
