Colds are common in young children, and are caused by temperature fluctuations or very often by the viruses that the little one comes into contact with in indoor school environments. To mitigate the discomfort of a cold, it is important to unblock the nasal passage, removing the excess mucus to ensure regular breathing, peaceful sleep and undisturbed feeding.
SALINE SOLUTION AND NASAL ASPIRATOR
As we know, young children do not know how to blow their nose. It is important, therefore, to help little ones to clear their nasal mucus so that they can continue to breathe easily, latching onto the breast or feeding from the bottle without difficulty. There are two key tools for unblocking the nose and removing mucus that no parent can do without: saline solution bottles and nasal aspirators. A gentle saline solution respects the nasal mucosa, softens the mucus and encourages expulsion, while careful use of the nasal aspirator gently helps to unblock the nose. The nasal aspirator is a very personal object: it is important not to use an aspirator that has been used on other children. The use of the nasal aspirator, in particular, eliminating the excess mucus that accumulates in the child's nasal passage, can prevent the onset of more serious illnesses: the bacteria and viruses present in the mucus can easily move into the ears or throat, causing sinusitis, otitis and other infections. With a clear nose, little ones can breathe easily, with no risk of complications due to the proliferation of germs and bacteria in the respiratory tract.
YES TO ASPIRATION, NO TO FORCE
The process of sucking out nasal mucus with an aspirator is not something that children enjoy, particularly older ones. As such, it is important to try to prepare them for this process in a calm manner, choosing a comfortable environment and a relaxing position. If possible, never force your child or use physical restraint.
