THE BENEFITS OF THE SOOTHER IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF LITTLE ONES, AND A FEW TIPS ON HOW TO USE IT PROPERLY
For babies, sucking is a natural, instinctive movement that can have a calming and relaxing effect, preventing prolonged crying. In addition to being essential for feeding, therefore, sucking has a number of positive effects that justify the use of a soother. Finally, paediatricians recommend using a soother during sleep, as it can reduce the risk of SIDS.
CALM AND SERENITY
Sucking stimulates the production of serotonin in little ones, which is very important in regulating mood and sleep, promoting calm and serenity. For this reason, beyond its nutritional function, sucking gives comfort to the baby and can help relaxation, perhaps before bedtime.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF A BABY'S MOUTH
According to the analyses conducted by the SIDO Scientific Committee and the Chicco Baby Research Center, the proper use of a soother in the first few years of life stimulates neuromuscular activity, contributing to the proper development of the muscles of the face and tongue, and as a result, of the chewing apparatus and the mouth as a whole. It is important, therefore, to choose a soother with an orthodontic teat, which fits the mouth of the little one perfectly and ensures the tongue is in the correct position. Indeed, the correct pressure of the tongue against the palate, especially at the sides, contributes to the proper formation of the latter, creating enough space for the teeth to grow properly.
THE SOOTHER - HOW, AND HOW LONG
Using a soother when breastfeeding can serve as a valuable tool for baby in the first few months of life, before gradually beginning to discourage use from around 24 months. In fact, the Ministry of Health advises that the use of soothers should be stopped by 36 months. It is important to ensure that the soother is always used correctly - not dipping it into sweet substances, for example, as this could lead to the onset of tooth decay, and not giving it to little ones as soon as they start crying. We must remember that crying is baby's way of communicating, and silencing this with the soother is the equivalent of not listening.
